On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, a line of severe thunderstorms swept across Nebraska's southern Panhandle and produced a destructive burst of straight-line wind. The National Weather Service reported a 92 mph gust at Broadwater in Morrill County — comparable to a strong tornado, but straight-line — with a second 74 mph gust nearby. Broadwater took the hardest hit of the event.
The damaging wind spread east and south. Oshkosh, the Garden County seat, was raked by a cluster of gusts up to 78 mph, with 75 and 70 mph readings around town; a 76 mph gust hit northeast of Lodgepole; and a 70 mph gust was clocked at Chappell in Deuel County. The storms dropped large hail too — golf-ball hail (1.75") near Lisco in Garden County and walnut-size (1.50") and quarter-size (1.00") hail near Bridgeport in Morrill County. Every one of those gusts cleared the 58 mph severe threshold, and at 92 mph the Broadwater gust is the kind of wind that strips shingles, peels ridge caps, and drops tree limbs onto roofs.
The Panhandle has been hammered all summer. Baseball-size hail (2.75") pounded downtown Scottsbluff and tennis-ball hail hit Grant on June 22–25, and hen-egg hail (2.00") fell near Dalton on June 23 — all within 40–60 miles. Wind-driven hail and 70-to-90 mph gusts leave damage that often isn't visible from the driveway: bruised shingle mats, broken granule surfaces, and dented soft metals can look fine from the street while quietly shortening a roof's life and opening the door to leaks months later.
